Moonphase Watch – By Claude Bernard Watches
The Moonphase watch has evolved from peoples desire to find an accurate method of telling the time of day.
The method of telling the time by the passing of the moon around the earth has been used for centuries. The discovery of a stone mechanism called the Antikythera dating back to 100 B.C. is thought to be the earliest known “clock” . This “clock” could predict the position and phases of the moon around the earth.
Its the regularity of the moons movement around the earth makes that makes the phases of the moon a reliable method of recording the passage of time.
The term “moon phase”, is the area of the moon that is lit by sunlight and visible to us from earth.
Identifying the Moon Phases
Astronomers have identified the four major phases of the moon as follows,
- The “New Moon” occurs when the moon is not visible from earth as the sun and the moon are in alignment on the same side of the earth.
- “First Quarter” is when the sun shines on the right-hand side of the moon.
- The “Full Moon” occurs when the entire surface of the moon is lit by the Sun`s light.
- The “Last Quarter” is when only the left hand-side has the Sun`s light on it and so only the left hand side of the moon is visible from earth. This cycle is repeated every 29.53 days which is close to the average number of days in our present Julian calendar that we use today.
